Our recommendation in brief
For two adults and two children, organise supplies around your normal routines. The aim is a usable cupboard, with quantities your household understands.
Work out quantities before shopping
At the government drinking-water allowance, four people need 36 litres over three days, plus water for other uses and any pets. That could be eighteen 2-litre bottles; the bottle arrangement is an example, not a recommended brand or pack. Check shelf space and lifting weight before ordering.
Plan twelve person-meals for each day, or 36 across three days, adjusting portions for the children. Count ready-to-eat breakfasts, lunches and dinners separately so a large pile of snacks does not hide missing meals. Keep allergies and familiar textures in mind.
Give each essential a place
Put food and hygiene items in separate containers. Keep a manual can opener with tins, cables beside the power bank and the correct spare batteries beside the radio. A written list is useful when different adults do the shopping.
One powerful torch cannot be in two rooms at once. Consider who needs to move around independently and whether a head torch would free an adult’s hands. Existing blankets and warm layers should come before specialist purchases.
Practise a short household check
With mains lights still available, ask everyone to locate the torch and emergency contacts. Check that adults can tune the radio and charge each phone. Explain the plan calmly to children and include something familiar to do without a screen.
Divide the shopping over ordinary trips. Recheck quantities after visitors stay or household needs change. A family checklist should be a living inventory, not a box sealed and forgotten.
